GROWTH PLUSย is our specialty growth formula. Formulated with unprecedented amounts of Antarctic krill, and white fish meal, this formula's main objective is to produce a maximum growth and superior body conformation. With the exception of the readily convertable carotenoids from the krill, there are no other color enhancers added to impair the unmatched growth performance. Koi convert the nutrients from food much more effectively into size when they don't expend valuable energy on putting on color. A two-step application of vitamins and minerals, especially vitamins C & E, ensure that the luster, sheen and whites of your koi are always at their best. As in all other Dainichi koi foods,ย GROWTH PLUSย contains calcium montmorillonite clay to simulate the natural ingestion of mineral particles and to bind and neutralize metabolic toxins. Raw, fully potent vitamins, digestive enzymes and garlic ensure that the fish are healthy and free of internal parasites. Furthermore, the scouring action of the clay enhances a continued rejuvenation of the digestive tract, which in turn ensures a maximum rate of digestion and assimilation of nutrients. With only two sources of starch (flour as binder and wheat germ as a source of vitamins E and B),ย GROWTH PLUSย keeps the body conformation of all koi in a constant show-ready condition. As an additional benefit, the low waste production by koi, helps keeps the dissolved organics levels low in your pond, making it an invaluable aid in eliminating algal blooms.

USAGE

This is not a 'color food'. Color foods are metabolically expensive, meaning that koi expend valuable energy into coloring-up instead of converting the energy into increased body mass. The high levels of carotenoids present in the krill produce great reds (hi), however, for deeper magenta tone red and blue colors, this formula could be supplemented with one of our spirulina containing formulas such as PREMIUM orย COLOR INTENSIFIER.
Feed your fish only as much as they will eat (immediately) in a few minutes, 2 to 4 times daily. Smaller, more frequent feeding are preferred over a single large one. All Dainichi foods have low levels of starches to prevent excessive swelling in the digestive tract and to maintain a lean show-ready body conformation.ย GROWTH PLUSย is a growth promoter without equal in any climate, but is especially valuable for use in northern climates, where the peak growth season is relatively short. This formula can be used at any time as long as the water temperature is above 60ยฐ-65ยฐ F for extended periods of time.

There are no tricks to growing-out great looking and robust tosai (one year old) koi.
As this 14 inch showa demonstrates, the high levels of marine proteins (44% protein) are precisely what is needed to do the job.

The lean and powerful body conformation of this sanke are directly dependent on the low fat and low carbohydrate content of this formula.
Body conformation such as this is not made on a cereal diet.
The fish and krill protein promote spectacular growth without a fat build-up in the process.

Questions & Answers

Have a Question?

Ask a Question
  • What kind of growth can I expect, I will be feeding fantails in a small pond

Dainichi Growth Plus is one of the better growth foods on the market. It isn't a "magic" food, but if your fantails have good genetics and you're providing excellent water quality, you should see noticeably faster growth than with inexpensive pond foods. The food contains 44% protein from high-quality marine sources (white fish meal and Antarctic krill) and is designed specifically to maximize lean body growth rather than simply adding fat.

For fantail goldfish, here's what I'd realistically expect:

    • Young fantails (2โ€“4 inches):
      • During one warm growing season (Mayโ€“September), you could see 1.5 to 3 inches of growth under excellent conditions.
      • Exceptional fish with outstanding genetics may grow a little more.
    • Adult fantails (4โ€“6+ inches):
      • Growth slows considerably.
      • You might see ยฝ to 1 inch per year, but they'll usually fill out more than they lengthen.

The food is only part of the equation. These factors have an even bigger impact:

    1. Water temperature: 70โ€“80ยฐF is the sweet spot. Growth slows dramatically below about 65ยฐF. Dainichi recommends Growth Plus primarily for warm water when fish can properly digest the higher protein.
    2. Water quality: Ammonia and nitrite should always be zero, and nitrates kept low with good filtration and water changes.
    3. Feeding frequency: Three to five small meals per day produce better growth than one large feeding because goldfish digest small meals more efficiently. This is also consistent with the experience of many serious koi keepers.
    4. Stocking density: Less crowding means faster growth.
    5. Oxygen: Heavy feeding requires excellent aeration.

Since you mentioned it's a small pond

A small pond can grow fantails very well, but only if the filtration keeps up with the increased feeding. Dainichi Growth Plus is a relatively low-waste food compared to many cheaper brands, but any high-protein diet will increase your biofilter's workload.

    My suggestion

If your goal is maximum size, I'd feed:

    • Dainichi Growth Plus as the primary food during the warmest months.
    • Feed 3โ€“4 small meals per day rather than one or two large feedings.
    • Once water temperatures fall below about 65ยฐF, gradually switch to a wheat-germ or all-season formula.

If you're trying to grow show-quality fantails, I can also suggest a feeding schedule that combines Growth Plus with another food to maximize both growth and body shape while keeping the fish healthy.
