One of my home projects for the summer was to “resurrect” my shed from it’s desitute state to a more eye-pleasing state. The shed, orginally blue, to the match the neighbor’s house was painted to match my house. No, I didn’t steal their shed in middle of the night! Actually, the neighbor’s home was in foreclosure and the current owner was willing to sell this shed. So, the purchase was made.
Since my budget was small, I did the following:
- Painted the exterior which took 1-1/2 gallons of paint for the siding and 1/2 gallon of paint for the trim. $75
- Replaced the 2×4 boards on the doors. The previous boards were rotting. $10
- Lined the window box with roof flashing. This is a cool idea that I saw in the Backyard Living Magazine. The flashing was cut with a pair of tin snips to resemble scallops (look above the After photo). I then painted the flashing and lightly sanded the flashing for a worn look. When handling roof flashing, be sure to wear gloves and any other protective items needed as it has sharp edges. I then nailed the flashing to the existing window box for a new look. A roll of roof flashing costs $20.
- Replaced door hardware. $15
- Placed mulch around plants. $10
- Adorned the base of the window box with existing decorations.
Total Cost of this Project: $130.00
Ways to save even more money on this project:
-
Consider checking the paint clearance aisle for colors that might match your desired color. I have bought paint this way. This can be a money savings.
-
Check for broken bags of mulch which are marked down considerably.
-
Revive the old hardware by using an abrasive wool pad. Paint if desired.

Get creative! It’s fun!
